One Old, One New
If you have trouble finding your exact size at a thrift store, try combining one new item with one thrifted item.
For example, you might buy dress pants new from a retailer and then find a blazer at a thrift store for $10 that complements them well.
Going-Out-of-Business Sales
If a local retailer is closing or having a major clearance sale, it may be a great opportunity to purchase professional clothing at a steep discount. These sales can sometimes offer prices similar to thrift stores but with brand-new items.
Look for Quality Brands
Sometimes you can find a diamond in the rough at a thrift store. Keep an eye out for well-known brands that are known for quality.
Examples include: Ralph Lauren, Brooks Brothers, Calvin Klein, J. Crew
Thrift Accessories
You can frequently find:
• Ties
• Belts
• Pocket squares
Many of these items cost between $1–$5, making them an easy way to upgrade your professional look.
Vintage Is Better
Some older clothing pieces were made with higher-quality materials and construction than modern fast fashion.
Vintage pieces can sometimes be: More durable, made with natural fabrics, better constructed
These items may last longer than newer clothing.
Check the Shoes
Dress shoes are commonly donated to thrift stores.
If they appear slightly worn or scuffed, they can often be restored with basic shoe polish and cleaning. A quick polish can make an inexpensive pair of shoes look much more professional.
Find Inspiration
If you see an outfit you like at a retail store, you can often replicate the look for much less money.
Take a photo of the outfit or style combination, then visit a thrift store and look for pieces that are similar in color, fit, and style.
This approach allows you to recreate professional outfits without paying full retail prices
